AH, the Joys of Spring! The days begin warming in February, and the sun returns in strength.
Pomegranates start leafing out by February 1st, ornamental cherry trees put
forth white blossoms.
By mid-March, citrus trees and ornamentals such as wisteria and Arizona
lilac begin to bloom.
For the next four months, gardening is glorious.
It's the right time to plant peppers and tomatoes. Try some of the
heirloom varieties.
The seeds and plants you started in the fall
come to full production during springtime.
It's an excellent time to
plant fruit trees, citrus, nuts, and berries.
Check the U of A Extension Office publications for more information.
Phoenix Spring is hard to define. Some days it is more like winter,
other days like summer. A lot depends on when the heat sets in, hopefully
late!
You can continue planting cool season varieties like lettuce, spinach,
chard, radishes, and greens. Look at the seed packet or planting calendar
for tips. Plant tomatoes and peppers, and later in the spring add summer
squash, eggplant, cucumbers and other heat loving plants.
Early in the
spring, beware of a last frost that can damage tender vegetation.
